Corpse flowers are very rare. They only bloom once every decade and the bloom only lasts about 24 hours.
The smell is disgusting.. it smells like rotting flesh. This one in Melbourne at the Australian National Botanical Gardens stunk like dead rats.
The plants also create their own heat which helps spread the smell for miles. The reason, it needs to attract specific pollinators, especially bugs that want to lay their eggs in rotting flesh. Sounds gross, but we need all the pollinators we can to help spread plant life.
